About the event
Canadian ethnomusicologist and singer Dr Judith Cohen shares her repertoire of traditional Sephardic songs, many of them old ballads and wedding songs which are rarely heard. You'll also hear songs from cultures where Sephardim have lived - in Bulgarian, Turkish, Portuguese, French, Spanish and Yiddish. Judith presents in a warm, informal and interactive style, sharing stories of her many years of travel and fieldwork in communities around the Mediterranean and beyond.
Dr Judith Cohen is a Canadian ethnomusicologist, singer and storyteller, known internationally for her work in Sephardic music, music among Crypto-Jews of Portugal and Brazil, and related traditions from medieval Iberia to the Balkans, French Canada, Spain, Portugal and more. Based on Toronto, she teaches part-time at York University and is the consultant for the Alan Lomax Spain 1952 collection. Her most recent travels doing fieldwork, and giving lectures and concerts, include Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Morocco, France, Italy, California…
